Well said. I talk with my students about animals in film and TV. I tell them the reason they feel sorry for Bambi is because it's not a deer losing its mother, it's a little boy. And we know it's a little boy because we met him. We heard him speak. We felt his emotions. So we feel for this boy when he loses his mother.
Have you ever read Sergei Eisenstein's book on Disney? He makes a somewhat similar point -- animation as animism.
Haven't read that yet- but it's fascinating to see one master of cinema speak well of another like that.
